Cheating to get a perfect performance

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Lately I’ve been recording a band that has been having trouble with the more difficult parts of their songs. The usual methods for getting a good take aren’t enough so I have had to use a sneaky trick just so we can move on and not waste hours recording the same 8 bars over and over.
via stock.xchngUsually when I record I like to do a few takes of the whole song, from those takes we decide if there is anything worth keeping, if not then we get rid of it all and start working section by section. We’ll record a bunch of takes until we think we’ve got a good one. I’ll then use elastic audio to get things even tighter.
If the musician can’t get through the part straight through then we’ll either record half the part at a time or we’ll piece together a composite take using the best parts of all the previous takes.

When that still isn’t good enough I have a really dirty trick that I hate to have to resort to, but it keeps things moving and we stop wasting time.

AVID/Digidesign skipping AES 2009

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Posted on the DUC today:  http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread.php?t=251977

For those of you planning on attending the 2009 AES Convention in New York (October 9-12), we want to let you know about our plans for the show this year.

After much thought, Avid has decided not to exhibit at AES 2009. While Avid won’t have a booth presence on the show floor, we will have a team of sales managers, application engineers, and executive staff in attendance, and will be hosting meetings at a nearby hotel suite.

Avid will also be interacting with customers, prospects, and the media on a more highly personalized level through various initiatives planned through the year.

This decision is not a financial one nor is it a permanent one — AES is an important show for Avid, and the company is 100% committed to the audio community. This decision has no impact on plans to attend other tradeshows this year.

Avid has decided to use its resources to plan more customer-focused initiatives to work with and support the artists, musicians, producers, engineers, mixers, composers, and sound designers that make up a vital part of the Avid community.

What do I see from this? The next version of Pro Tools will not be announced in October. The version with all the bugs fixed that came with PT 8. Traditionally new software and hardware is announced at either AES in October or NAMM in January/July. If it’s not in October it’ll be January and that will be far too late.

Personally, I’ll likely be pretty cozy with Logic 9 by October.

Guest Post – Quality and how to get it

Quality

Ever feel like your almost there in your recordings or production? Ever feel like if only you had one more thing you’d be capable of making the best song ever? We all feel it at times and its usually while looking at some piece of new ass, errr, I mean gear. When it comes down to it the biggest difference is talent. Raw talent. Period. No question about it. You can take a Shure SM57 or a Audio Technica AT2020 run it through a M-Box and as long as you have talent on both sides (the person recording and the person performing) then it will be fine. No need for a Great River, Avalon, Neumann or anything else. Okay now lets say you have talent, here is a short list of how to move “on up”…

  1. Talent (Again you can never have too much of this)
  2. Basic Gear (Interface, Mic, cables, without these you really can’t do much at all…)
  3. Acoustics (NOT soundproofing but a acoustically treated room. Great kits at GIKAcoustics.com!)
  4. Preamps (Second biggest difference you will hear besides good acoustics!)
  5. Mics (Having the right mic for the source is pretty important!)
  6. Conversion (Once you can hear the difference between converters you really have a ear for this music thing!)

That’s it! Not a new DAW, plug in or any sounds. Don’t go buy a new synth or keyboard. Learn how to use what you have first and go through the list!

Thanks Obi for contributing to AGZ!
