Continuing the series on audio effects, this week I’m explaining EQ (equalization) and filters.
The terms EQ and filter seem to mean different things, Filtering is generally what we say when we want to remove frequencies, and EQ is when we want to shape the sound by boosting and cutting.
The truth is, it’s all filtering.

If you want to export each track from your Live session so that you or a professional (like me) can mix in a different DAW, this is what you need to do. (Live 7 is shown in the example)
First of all:
- Make sure your song is in arrange mode
- Make a reference mix of what the song sounds like right now
- turn off any effects that are unnecessary (reverbs, compression, especially on the vocals)

This is your song in arrange view.

Here’s a list of electronics that have failed me in the past year.
Is it just me or is this stuff built to fail?
- Compaq r3000 laptop (overheated CPU, bad hard drive, bad battery, FAIL)
- Creative Audigy 2NX USB sound card (drivers are terrible and the cause uncountable system hangs, FAIL)
- SanDisk Sansa e250 mp3 player (permanent white screen makes it a FAIL)
- Audiovox piece of shit cellphones (calls either wouldn’t connect or would be dropped, started in the last 6 months of my 3 year contract, FAIL)
- Ultra 500w Computer Power Supply (computer doesn’t power up, FAIL)
- Eden Nemesis NA320 (in for repair twice in 3 years, FAIL)
- Epson Stylus CX4800 printer/scanner (electronic ink level detection that’s a damn liar and now a tiny piece of plastic has broken and now the printer doesn’t work at all, FAIL)
This is in order up until yesterday when my printer broke. On could argue it’s all cheap consumer crap, the fact is I have to replace all this stuff and that is NOT cheap.
all this stuff is out of warranty now too, they won’t even guarantee it will work for more than a year after purchase. Remember the days when an an appliance worked for 20 years without problems? If it didn’t it was defective and replaced.
They don’t make ‘em like they used to.
p.s. I now have an mp3 phone that doesn’t have a headphone jack…fail

Continuing my series on effects this week I’m talking about reverb. The different types and methods, and I’ll explain the most important parameters. I’ll mostly be talking about the kinds you will be using when mixing and what is available as plugins.
Digital Reverb Technology
There are two ways of creating a reverb effect in the digital world, by using mathematical calculations to create a sense of space, which is called Algorithmic. And by creating an impulse response, a snapshot of a real space, and applying that to the sound, which is called Convolution.
Reverb is essentially a series of delayed signals, and Algorithmic reverbs work pretty well to recreate this. Most reverb plugins, stomp boxes, and racks are algorithmic style.

A while ago I mentioned using modulation effects to help create movement within a mix, in this article I’ll explain the different types of modulation effects that we have available for mixing.
The effects I’ll be explaining are:
- Tremolo
- Vibrato
- Flanging
- Phase Shifting or Phasing
- Chorus

I’ll start with some easy ones, then move on to the harder to explain, but more commonly used effects.
